Literature Analysis

Literature Analysis
Topics and/or Events:
1.       My book was about the experiences two people had when they were in the United States of America was involved in the Vietnam War. The story is written in two perspectives. On perspective is told by a male and what he faced in the horrific war and the perspective is told by a girl who participated in the war as a nurse. The book described how it was like to be a nurse at that time, which was to try to save as many dying people possible. It described how gruesome it was to see libs ripped apart. The book also described how it was in the battlefield. How it felt to know that your life was at stake and every action you make will affect your life tremendously.
2.       I think the author wrote about these people and the events they participated in was to appreciate all those people who died in the Vietnam War and to appreciate their sacrifice.
3.       I honesty just chose the book randomly from the Rigehtti’s library. What caught my attention was that book spoke about the Vietnam War. It describe how it was for people to be involved with the war.
4.       Yes the book was very realistic. It’s a wakeup call to the reality of war. It helped me realize how much our heroes sacrifice from their daily lives just to defend the country and the freedom of the people.
People:
1.       Like I stated earlier I think the author chose to right about these two heroes to describe how they contributed to the Vietnam War and the challenges the war had.
2.       The book doesn’t give names, but it states that it describes how men, such as sergeant, treated the other men on the battlefield and they’d even treat them like shit off the battlefield. There were men including one of the main characters who would stay up every night and get no sleep because they were so afraid of getting ambushed and dying in their sleep. To make these characters seem nonfiction I would use direct characterization.
3.       I think it’s interesting to write about these people because growing up they didn’t have to struggle and they didn’t know what the definition of war meant until they joined the military.
1.       One example of indirect characterization is when he says “Shit, if my folks had to send their poodle they’re shed more tears than to send me” he is inferring that his parents doesn’t care about him and what he does very much. Another example is “I tried to be invisible most of the time at camp” you can infer that he’s trying to say that he doesn’t like to be heard or noticed. An example of direct characterization is when the author says “I was young, stupid and ignorant, along with all the other clowns. Another example is when the author says “I came from San Jose, California.”
2.       Yes the Author does show change in the characters. At first they both wanted to go on this quest into the military to see and experience different and new things, but when reality struck them from being in the war for years they transformed into emotionless people trying to everything to survive and it even gets to the point where they don’t care if they survive or not anymore.
3.       The author uses the events going on in the story to create the mood and tone. For example, when one of the bases was under attack and slaughtering all but one person in the department set the story to a very depressing mood/tone.
4.       The author didn’t think that war was necessary and wished that there wasn’t a war against the Vietnamese people so he wouldn’t have to be involved in a war.
5.       The author didn’t use any documents to support his views of what happened during the Vietnam War.
Style:
1.       The author used a journalistic style writing. He described his journey in chronological order.  He also used foreshadowing when he stated he didn’t know what he was getting himself into before going into the war, which gives the reader a hint that he’s going to have a rough time at the war.
2.       The author focuses on action and dialogue. Because he does this, it kind of gives the reader a glimpse as to how it was like for the people who suffered and died for freedom.
3.       The author describes the action that’s taking place in the brutal Vietnam War to set a tone and mood in the story. He also uses the main character’s thoughts and dialogues heard.
4.       I think the author’s attitude towards the Vietnam War at first was seen as war in the movies when the victor is a hero, but then later found out that war nothing near being like that. Nothing positive comes from war.
5.       The author used historical documents and it didn’t really matter to me
Enduring Memory:
I learned to make sure you have all the details and information about the event you want to participate in before committing to it, because once you commit to it then there’s no going back. I’ve also learned to embrace life as it is even when times are hard, because I have it ten times better than soldiers putting their life’s at risk.
